This is her story…

 

There are few words that pack a punch quite like “cancer”. When I was diagnosed on International Women’s Day, 2021, I was in Hong Kong, waiting out the covid border lockdowns. I knew the news was going to be bad - you know when you try and reschedule an appointment and the doctor says you have to come in, it’s not for a lovely tea party. I watched my doctors eyes above his mask, and his hands turn pages of medical results. “We have confirmed you have cancer”. I heard his words, and at the same time, I didn’t. My brain immediately went to bargaining, arguing, pleading “This can’t happen to me”. The ringing in my ears, and tingling through my hands. Even talking about it now brings back tears I thought I had spent.

 

But I was lucky. After 27 radiation treatments, 5 chemos and 3 brachytherapy, I was told my cancer was no longer present. And I was safe… until I wasn’t.

 

Re-diagnosis occurred in June of 2022. I had since returned to Australia and was navigating life as a single mother back in the family home. 4 lesions had been found in my lungs, and my oncologist advised without treatment, I had months left. But then - a gift. A new drug, called pembrolizumab- had shown promising results in the treatment of melanoma and carcinoma…my type of cancer. I had the protein markers and the team at Peter Mac thought it could work… but it came at a price. Not the price of losing hair, or weight, or dignity. A price of $60,000.

 

What would you say? What could I do? Like many, I thought treatment through hospitals was covered by Medicare. But with new drugs coming on the market all the time, some of these are not yet on the PBS.

 

There are people like me across the country seeking life-saving treatment…. but at a price. Anti is Anti-poverty. Anti-suffering. Anti-angst, and anti-worry. Anti-fear. It’s the voice for those who have already battled so hard, and now have to make ends meet, against the odds.
